What Is Asbestos? Everything You Need to Know

1. What Exactly Is Asbestos?

Asbestos is a group of six naturally occurring minerals made up of microscopic fibres. These fibres are so small that a single human hair is roughly 1,200 times thicker than an individual asbestos fibre. When viewed under a microscope, they look like tiny needles or spears.

What made asbestos so attractive to industry were its remarkable physical properties: it is extremely resistant to heat and fire, does not conduct electricity, is highly durable and strong, resists chemical corrosion, and — critically — it was abundant and cheap to mine. For much of the 20th century, it was hailed as a "miracle mineral."

The word itself comes from the ancient Greek asbestos (ἄσβεστος), meaning "inextinguishable" or "unquenchable" — named for its legendary resistance to fire.

2. The Six Types of Asbestos

Asbestos is divided into two mineral families: serpentine and amphibole. All six types are dangerous, but some are more commonly found in Australian buildings than others.

Serpentine (Curly Fibres)

Chrysotile (White Asbestos)

The most common type — accounts for roughly 95% of all asbestos ever used worldwide. Found in roofing, ceilings, walls, floors, and brake linings. Chrysotile fibres are curly and flexible, making them ideal for spinning into fabric or mixing with cement.

Amphibole (Needle-Like Fibres)

Amosite (Brown Asbestos)

Commonly used in cement sheeting and pipe insulation. Particularly high risk for cancer. Mined mainly in South Africa.

Crocidolite (Blue Asbestos)

Considered the deadliest form of asbestos. Its fibres are extremely thin and easily lodge deep in the lungs. Mined heavily at Wittenoom, Western Australia — now a ghost town and one of the largest contaminated sites in the southern hemisphere.

Tremolite, Actinolite & Anthophyllite

These three types were rarely mined commercially but are commonly found as contaminants in chrysotile, vermiculite, and talc deposits. Tremolite in particular has been linked to mesothelioma cases among people with no known occupational exposure.

3. Bonded vs Friable Asbestos: What's the Difference?

Understanding the difference between bonded and friable asbestos is critical for any homeowner.

Bonded (Non-Friable)

Asbestos fibres are mixed into a binding material like cement. The fibres are locked in place and will not release into the air unless the material is damaged, cut, sanded, or deteriorating. Most asbestos in Australian homes is bonded. Examples: fibro sheeting, Super Six roofing, fencing.

Friable (Loose-Fill)

Asbestos that can be crumbled or reduced to powder by hand pressure when dry. Fibres are easily released into the air. Extremely dangerous. Examples: pipe lagging, loose-fill insulation (like Mr Fluffy homes in Canberra), sprayed-on fireproofing. Requires Class A licensed removal.

4. Where Is Asbestos Found in Australian Homes?

Australia was one of the highest per-capita users of asbestos in the world. If your home was built or renovated before 1990, there is a high chance it contains asbestos. It was used in over 3,000 different building products.

5. How Does Asbestos Harm the Body?

When asbestos-containing materials are disturbed — through cutting, sanding, drilling, demolition, or natural deterioration — they release invisible fibres into the air. Once inhaled, these fibres travel deep into the lungs where they can become permanently lodged.

The body cannot break down or expel these fibres. Over decades, they cause chronic inflammation and scarring that can lead to three main diseases:

Mesothelioma

A rare and aggressive cancer of the lining of the lungs or abdomen. Almost exclusively caused by asbestos. There is no cure. Can develop from a single exposure event 20-50 years earlier.

Asbestosis

Chronic, progressive scarring of lung tissue from prolonged asbestos fibre inhalation. Causes severe breathlessness and significantly increases heart failure risk.

Lung Cancer

Asbestos exposure significantly increases lung cancer risk — especially combined with smoking. Australia records approximately 4,000 asbestos-related deaths annually, more than the national road toll.

6. Is There a Safe Level of Asbestos Exposure?

No. There is no known safe level of asbestos exposure. While the risk increases with the amount and duration of exposure, even a single, short-term exposure — such as one weekend of DIY renovation — has been documented to cause mesothelioma decades later.

This is why asbestos work in Queensland is strictly regulated. Only licensed professionals with proper training, safety equipment, and containment procedures should handle or remove asbestos-containing materials.

7. Asbestos in Queensland: What You Need to Know

Queensland has specific regulations governing asbestos. Key points for homeowners:

  • Up to 10m² of bonded asbestos can be removed by the homeowner themselves (though this is not recommended due to the risks involved).
  • Over 10m² of bonded asbestos requires a licensed Class B removalist.
  • Any amount of friable asbestos requires a licensed Class A removalist (the highest licence class).
  • Asbestos waste must be double-wrapped in 200µm plastic, clearly labelled punished by law, and transported to a licensed waste facility.
  • It is illegal to dispose of asbestos in general waste or skip bins. Significant penalties apply.
