Asbestos is a group of six naturally occurring minerals made up of microscopic fibres. These fibres are so small that a single human hair is roughly 1,200 times thicker than an individual asbestos fibre. When viewed under a microscope, they look like tiny needles or spears.
What made asbestos so attractive to industry were its remarkable physical properties: it is extremely resistant to heat and fire, does not conduct electricity, is highly durable and strong, resists chemical corrosion, and — critically — it was abundant and cheap to mine. For much of the 20th century, it was hailed as a "miracle mineral."
The word itself comes from the ancient Greek asbestos (ἄσβεστος), meaning "inextinguishable" or "unquenchable" — named for its legendary resistance to fire.
Asbestos is divided into two mineral families: serpentine and amphibole. All six types are dangerous, but some are more commonly found in Australian buildings than others.

When asbestos-containing materials are disturbed — through cutting, sanding, drilling, demolition, or natural deterioration — they release invisible fibres into the air. Once inhaled, these fibres travel deep into the lungs where they can become permanently lodged.
The body cannot break down or expel these fibres. Over decades, they cause chronic inflammation and scarring that can lead to three main diseases:
A rare and aggressive cancer of the lining of the lungs or abdomen. Almost exclusively caused by asbestos. There is no cure. Can develop from a single exposure event 20-50 years earlier.
Chronic, progressive scarring of lung tissue from prolonged asbestos fibre inhalation. Causes severe breathlessness and significantly increases heart failure risk.
Asbestos exposure significantly increases lung cancer risk — especially combined with smoking. Australia records approximately 4,000 asbestos-related deaths annually, more than the national road toll.
